CHAPTER TWO

At Piah’s mother’s house, Mrs. Mayers was busy preparing food for the Wilson’s family. “Mrs. Mayers, is Linde with you?” Piah asked. “Sorry madam, Linde is at home taking care of the house and her siblings.” “Oh! Mrs. Mayers, don’t call me madam. Just call me Piah.” “O…k…a…y P…i…a…h,” she muttered with a shiver in her voice. “It’s okay Mrs. Mayers. Linde and I have been friends for quite a long time and you’re just like family to me. Please give my warm regards to Linde when you get home and tell her that long to see her soon,” Piah said as she walked out of the kitchen.

While Piah’s family were having lunch, Mrs. Mayers stood right there wondering whether there were any errands for her to run. As she watched them eat, something suddenly came to her mind. She remembered her family. She remembered how happy they looked when they dined together, shared stories and laughed at her husband’s funny jokes.

“Mrs. Mayers…!Mrs. Mayers…!” Mr. Wilson, while raising his hands, called to attract her attention. But Mrs. Mayers was so immersed in thought that she neither noticed nor heard him until Piah walked to her and tapped her on the shoulder and whispered, “Mrs. Mayers, are you okay? Is everything fine? Father is calling you.” “Oh…! I’m sorry Piah, I’m fine, don’t worry.” She then walked towards Mr. Wilson and asked, “Yes sir? I’m sorry! I didn’t hear you calling me”. “It’s alright. Get my phone my room. Hurry!” Mr. Wilson shouted. “Yes sir,” She said rushing towards the master-bedroom. She picked the phone and came back half walking, half running. She then gave the phone to her master. “Here it is Sir and I’m sorry,” she said apologetically. “Now go to the kitchen and continue with your work!” Mr. Wilson shouted.

“Dad, you don’t have to shout. Always talk to her calmly,” Piah said. “Maybe she was thinking about something and that’s why she couldn’t hear you calling her. Don’t be harsh to her. She’s a nice woman, Dad.”

While she was still composing herself in the kitchen, Pia walked in. “I’m sorry Mrs. Mayers if dad treated you badly. Maybe there was something urgent he wanted inquire from the office,” Piah explained. “It’s okay Piah. I understood your dad. It was solely my fault. I was not paying attention.” “Are you sure you are okay Mrs. Mayers?” Piah asked. “If you need help please feel to confide in me. You mean quite a lot to me and I will try my best to be of help to you my dear.”
